The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has ordered from Smiths Detection, of Morristown, NJ, $11.4 million worth of the company’s explosive trace detection technology.
The product, IONSCAN 500DT, which is intended for use at security checkpoints, identifies trace amounts of explosives collected on a single swab, in a matter of seconds. The technology uses ion mobile spectrometry technology in a dual tube design to provide the high sensitivity and accuracy needed to detect trace explosives.
IONSCAN 500DT is small and detects quickly, which makes it ideal for airport, ports and borders, air cargo screening facilities, public and private buildings, courthouses and correctional facilities, said the company.
“We are delighted to continue our partnership with TSA by providing reliable explosives detection solutions,” said Mark Laustra, Vice President of Homeland Security for Smiths Detection. “The sensitivity of the IONSCAN 500DT provides a high level of detection and enables TSA to continue its multilayered security approach.”
TSA had placed a $6 million order with Smiths Detection in October 2008. The company offers security solutions in civil and military markets worldwide, developing and manufacturing government-regulated technology products that identify explosives, chemical and biological agents, weapons and contraband. Smiths Detection is part of Smiths Group, a company that sells advanced technologies to markets worldwide. The company employs 22,000 people in more than 50 countries.
