Attacking systems for sensitive information for the purpose of espionage or monetization is certainly not new. In fact, it's a predictable aspect of crime because in our modern cyber era, digital information flows with ease, as systems become further integrated. The new trend that we continue to observe involves the vehicles that are used for these attacks.

Government agencies are more dependent than ever on computer systems to carry out their missions. From providing citizens access to public information over the Web to processing and accounting for trillions of dollars in spending, computer systems permeate virtually every aspect of government work.

Recently, attacks on our government and corporate infrastructure have been occurring with more regularity, compromising corporate, personal and classified information. No longer is the task of cyber-security relegated to IT offices and CIOs in the private sector, nor to a select number of government agencies. Instead, a call to action has been put forth to all entities -- especially the government -- to make cyber-security a top priority. It is now recognized as one of the most important national security challenges of our time.
