If there is anything we should have learned from the economic debacle of the last two years, it is that the status quo is not safe. And yet we continue building upon it until right past the point of collapse. It has happened time and again in our markets, and it is happening in IT support as we speak.

Local integrator SoundBytes Security was challenged to create a 100-camera surveillance system that would contribute to the safety of students and faculty members across the Massasoit Community College’s two sites -- the 100-acre Brockton Campus and an 18-acre complex in Canton.

Massasoit Community College caters to more than 8,000 students. It is one of the largest community colleges within the Massachusetts Public Higher Education system and offers a variety of associate degree programs and certificate courses.

Warren Davidson, Director of Business Development and Strategic Alliances, says that Objectivity provides data management solutions for large, scalable government databases with an emphasis on complex data. Being able to manage a mountain of data, connect the dots and find the 3-4 degrees of separation, involves pedabytes of data. Davidson argues that Objectivity’s ability to find the right data is critically important to the security of our country.

Ian Ehrenberg, VP and General Manager, indicates that Xtralis has a 25-year history of providing advanced detection technologies for intrusion detection, perimeter protection and CCTV. Applications include the Department of State and Consulates around the world, plus the Vancouver Olympics, where Xtralis provided the primary infrared protection device. The company is introducing its Vesda Echo Detector at the ISC West show.

Josh Phillips, Director of Marketing, describes the business of Lenel as providing integrated security technologies, bringing the best of breed software applications and multiple technologies into a single platform. Government markets include military and civilian buyers and the DoD, which use the OnGuard system, whose 2010 integrated access control, ID management and video surveillance system offers enhanced video surveillance.

Fredrik Nilsson, General Manager for Axis North America, says that Axis clients worldwide include subways, airports, military, government and commercial perimeter protection. The trends in government, he believes, are high resolution video packaged into networks. In 2009, Axis increased R&D spending by 24 percent, because the company believed that a recession stimulates technology, and buyers prefer better quality video and lower installation costs.

Tom Harada, Managing Director of the Security Systems Division, reports that the Pentax Atmospheric Interference Reduction Product technology (PAIR) has been named the best video product at the ISC West New Product Showcase. He explains that great optics and the capability of reducing atmospheric interference are long-forgotten, but vital concepts in making total videos, and this is what Pentax has addressed with its PAIR technology.
