Commentary and Opinions

Verint Systems Inc. has announced that the Metropolitan Council in Minneapolis/St. Paul is implementing its Nextiva Transit video solution from Verint Video Intelligence Solutions.

Day to day, most citizens do not think twice about the routine activities that their local law enforcement agencies complete in order to ensure their safety. Things like issuing citations for minor offenses or patrolling the neighborhood to prevent vandalism simply equate to another “day in the life” for law enforcement officers. Ideally, these routine activities keep neighborhoods all over the country relatively safe and quiet.

But what if the unthinkable happens?

By Rep. Ted Poe

[Editor’s note: Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX), a member of the House Judiciary Committee, delivered the following remarks on the floor of the House on March 22, 2010.]

Once again, there's a new push for an amnesty bill to pass this Congress. Yesterday, tens of thousands of people marched in Washington, D.C., wanting amnesty. And it was interesting. As I looked over this very peaceful crowd and all those people marching, I wondered why there were no American flags.

Many government organizations are charged with combating terrorism, identifying criminals and effectively applying immigration policies. All these activities require that persons of interests (and organizations and networks) be accurately identified. Identification is an extremely complex process that is only compounded by increasing data volumes, complex relationships, and tightly coupled application and data architectures.

A resident of the northern Israeli city of Migdal Haemek received two letter bombs by post earlier this month. The woman who received the packages, whose name has not been released, felt the packages were suspicious and called the police.

Although she said she was not under threat and could not understand who could have sent her the bombs, she was vigilant enough to alert the professionals.

The officers who arrived on the scene, called in the police IED unit to examine the letters and bomb techs determined that they were, indeed, letter bombs.

Despite the world's biggest and most expensive manhunt, the figure at the heart of the war against terror is still at large and seems to have vanished from the face of the earth.

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) unit of DHS plans a sole source purchase of two additional automated fingerprint and palm print identification systems for remote workstations to supplement the two it already uses.

The remote workstation versions, which are known as AFIX Tracker RWs, are supplied by AFIX Technologies, Inc., headquartered in Pittsburg, KS.

From 2000 through 2009, 154 officers were killed by a motorist while the officer was standing on the side of the road or directing traffic. This accounts for one quarter of all deaths in the line of duty.
The basic problem is that drivers today are inattentive due to texting, blaring their vehicle’s 12 speaker audio systems or talking on a cell phone.
