Warren Davidson, Director of Business Development and Strategic Alliances, says that Objectivity provides data management solutions for large, scalable government databases with an emphasis on complex data. Being able to manage a mountain of data, connect the dots and find the 3-4 degrees of separation, involves pedabytes of data. Davidson argues that Objectivity’s ability to find the right data is critically important to the security of our country.

Commentary and Opinions

Attacking systems for sensitive information for the purpose of espionage or monetization is certainly not new. In fact, it's a predictable aspect of crime because in our modern cyber era, digital information flows with ease, as systems become further integrated. The new trend that we continue to observe involves the vehicles that are used for these attacks.

Government agencies are more dependent than ever on computer systems to carry out their missions. From providing citizens access to public information over the Web to processing and accounting for trillions of dollars in spending, computer systems permeate virtually every aspect of government work.

If you were running Windows XP at work and used McAfee to protect it, Wednesday, April 21st was probably a pretty interesting day. Through an automated update, McAfee antivirus software wrongly identified a core Windows system file as a virus on some machines. It "cleaned" the infection, removing the suspicious file, which put thousands of government and corporate machines into an infinite reboot cycle.

For years, agencies took the same approach to information security as they did for physical security  --  they focused on locking down the perimeter, using firewalls and routers and VPNs. The objectives centered on external threats.

The public rift between China and Google has brought the notion of cyber-warfare into the public discourse. But the dangers of cyber-warfare have been around in various forms for a long time. The U.S. Government developed extensive security programs to counter that threat.

THE NEED FOR ACTIVE NETWORK FORENSICS
Neither small to large enterprises nor government institutions are immune to the threats that pervade today’s security landscape. Leakage of congressional documents, a half million credit card numbers hacked from a leading web host provider, and even a major security vendor falling victim to a website breach are just a few recent headlines that proclaim the costly network threats facing organizations of all types and sizes. Active network forensics makes all past and present network data instantly visible and allows perfect fidelity through replaying past traffic, enabling organizations to detect and understand the full source and scope of any security event so they can protect against further attacks.
