The recent bomb scare in New York City served as a wake-up call, highlighting that the U.S. is still vulnerable to an attack within our country. Though investigators say the bomb they found inside a parked car was not very sophisticated, it’s clear that terrorists with the determination and deadly materials could cause serious harm.

While strolling up and down the aisles at the ASIS New York City Chapter’s security expo at the Javits Center on April 30, I tried to take a quick reading on the current state of the government security marketplace, but frankly the views of half a dozen exhibitors were all over the map.

I wondered whether the economy-wide recession during the past two years was depressing government procurements, or whether the Obama administration’s pump-priming stimulus program had led to an increase in such government purchases.

   Once again, there's a new push for an amnesty bill to pass this Congress. Yesterday, tens of thousands of people marched in Washington, D.C., wanting amnesty. And it was interesting. As I looked over this very peaceful crowd and all those people marching, I wondered why there were no American flags.

Local integrator SoundBytes Security was challenged to create a 100-camera surveillance system that would contribute to the safety of students and faculty members across the Massasoit Community College’s two sites -- the 100-acre Brockton Campus and an 18-acre complex in Canton.

Massasoit Community College caters to more than 8,000 students. It is one of the largest community colleges within the Massachusetts Public Higher Education system and offers a variety of associate degree programs and certificate courses.

Raytheon, based in Waltham, MA, has been awarded a $23 million U.S. Army contract extension to provide mission support and system sustainment for the Rapid Aerostat Initial Deployment (RAID) systems that protect U.S. and coalition forces deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq.

UK-based CCTV manufacturer Conway Security Products is supplying camera housings and tailor-made bracketry to a highways agency project in Hertfordshire, England, that is seeing the Hatfield Tunnel on the A1(M) motorway refurbished to meet new European Union standards.

Hughes Network Systems, LLC, of Germantown, MD, a provider of broadband satellite networks and services, announced on July 26 it has completed a successful demonstration of its advanced airborne video solution to a key government agency, confirming full D-1 video resolution at air-to-ground user data rates of over 2 Mbps. 

Video Mount Products, of Stevensville, MD, a supplier of mounting solutions for the security, commercial, CI, residential and pro audio/video markets, has announced that its new DVR-LB2 DVR Lockbox is now shipping. The DVR-LB2 has an MSRP of $233.95. 

“The DVR-LB2 is an alternative to our popular DVR-LB1 DVR lockbox,” explained Keith Fulmer, president of Video Mount Products. “The DVR-LB2 features all the benefits of the DVR-LB-1, but also includes a smoked Plexiglas window that allows IR signal pass-through.” 

Toshiba Imaging Systems Division, a supplier of high definition (HD) camera technology for broadcast, scientific, industry and defense applications, has announced the recent use of the tiny, IK-HD1 high definition cameras as part of a camera rig that captures background plates for feature films. Experts at 24frame.com, a Southern California-based company that specializes in HD projection car process playback, selected Toshiba Imaging’s high def cameras to capture day/night moving plates to be used for feature film projection playback. &

Feeling Software Inc., of Montreal, Canada, has announced the latest product in its Omnipresence 3D suite of advanced physical security applications. Designed for architecture & engineering (A&E) firms, security integrators and security directors, Pro Design provides a never-before-seen approach to surveillance planning using 3D floor plans and maps.

The new Sperry-Spyder, SWLEF70 Magnum from Sperry West, Inc.  is a quick way to set up an interview room for professional archiving and monitoring. Clear audio is recorded and can also be monitored live through an amplified audio receiver or through the supplied video monitor. 

Integrated systems will account for more than 70 percent of the total security systems installation and maintenance market in Europe by 2013, according to a new study from IMS Research, of Wellingborough, England. 

The research, which measured the potential market for integrated security systems, also identified integration with heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) and building automation systems as a key trend for the future.

Matt Barnette, VP Sales and Marketing, points out that AMAG started out as an access control provider, but is now a full-service security products provider. New technologies being introduced include a new generation video enclosure which is IT sensory, the Hawkeye mobile, handheld device, which checks ID cards out in the field and can allow guards to look at videos while walking, and the new IDS product with 4-line keyboard display.

Fredrik Nilsson, General Manager for Axis North America, says that Axis clients worldwide include subways, airports, military, government and commercial perimeter protection. The trends in government, he believes, are high resolution video packaged into networks. In 2009, Axis increased R&D spending by 24 percent, because the company believed that a recession stimulates technology, and buyers prefer better quality video and lower installation costs.

Andy Teich, President of FLIR’s Commercial Systems Division, describes two new products. The FLIR Thermal Fence ties FLIR cameras together into a network that includes a network console and an analytics algorithm with many capabilities. The Guardsman is a handheld thermal imager designed for guard safety. Teich also explains that the company’s high-volume business in the auto market lowers costs on all FLIR Thermal Imaging products.

Tom Harada, Managing Director of the Security Systems Division, reports that the Pentax Atmospheric Interference Reduction Product technology (PAIR) has been named the best video product at the ISC West New Product Showcase. He explains that great optics and the capability of reducing atmospheric interference are long-forgotten, but vital concepts in making total videos, and this is what Pentax has addressed with its PAIR technology.

Everfocus is primarily involved in CCTV, according to Al Schwartz, product manager, but the company has evolved along with technology. Everfocus sells traditional analog cameras and digital video recorders for mobile customers and interior applications, but the company also offers a line of IP products where the technology is appropriate. Schwartz considers the new HD CCTV product to be exciting because it can re-use existing co-axial cables back to the DVR.
